One of the primary factors in this landscape design/build project which needed to be addresses was the silting over of the now newly dredged pond. This was being caused by the stream which runs into it. The stream ran slowly over several hundred yards of its length on this property, regularly overflowing its banks because of its shallow run, but then the elevation dropped precipitously so that it picked up speed, and silt, which it deposited as it slowed again where it ran into the stream.

The pond, where the stream enters, to the upper left. Now dredged and cleaned, two more major landscape procedures needed to occur for this pond to remain healthy: The stream needed to be regraded so that it picked up less silt and a new circulation system needed to be designed and built to keep the water of the pond freshly aerated and moving, especially in potential stagnant areas. This later would be achieved by adding two more streams flowing into the pond, each of which drew water from different, remote areas of the pond. That phase is addressed in page 3 of this landscape design/build brief.

The image to the right shows the stream where the elevation was too shallow, the stream broadened and flooded into the surrounding property. This area had to be deepened, which would allow more silt to be deposited here, and areas further down needed to be given a more gradual descent, lessening the pickup of silt.

This part of the landscape was the flood area (evident by the many Salix, or willow which grow here). In this portion of the landscape the stream needed to be deepened and the surrounding area raised with the silt removed from the stream.

The material taken from the stream was used to raise the grade in the surrounding area.

The dredging hoe has a long reach by virtue of an extendible arm and can remove about 2/3s of a yard of material in a scoop.

The image to the right shows this phase of the landscape renovation in progress.

These two images show the  same areas of the landscape. The small spruce above are the large spruce in the image to the right.

A variety of evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs and perennials were used to create a landscape that would provide four season interest.
